Mumbai: Three days after a 16-day-old infant was reported missing and later found dead in a gutter behind her house in Sion, police arrested her 25-year-old mother, Sama Ansari, for the murder.

According to the police, on Tuesday morning, the woman informed her husband about their daughter missing and immediately approached the Sion police station to register a missing person report. Police formed teams and began investigations.

Hours later in the same evening, police found the infant lying in a gutter behind the house. The infant was rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission. Sion police registered an ADR in the matter and are investigating the case. Police suspect the infant’s mother could have killed her daughter, as the baby was unwell since the past few days.

The infant’s parents are not financially stable and their daughter’s treatment would have cost them a fortune, police said. “We are yet to receive the post-mortem report from the hospital, which will ascertain the cause of death. However, our lead suspect is the mother, who may have killed her daughter.

It is likely since the baby was sick, which could cause them further financial burdens. The Investigation is underway and arrests will soon be made,” said an investigating officer.
