Mumbai : In a city like Mumbai that’s always on the move, intermodal transport planner apps on the smartphones have mostly been a success. Now, operators of the Mumbai Metro are launching ‘Mumbai Metro App’ on Thursday to ease intra-city travel with the Metro at the core.
Currently at the Beta stage, the app will be available on the Google Play store from Thursday for Android users, while iPhone users will have to wait longer to use it.
According to the spokesperson of Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd, the app is being introduced to provide value addition to the consumers. “The app will provide a comprehensive view of the journey for consumers across the city,” the spokesperson said. If a person wants to travel from Mulund to Versova, using the app he would get directions to take a bus or a train depending on his location. The app also has modes of “Best Route”, “Fewer Transfer” and “Less Walking” for convenience of the consumer.
Through the app, metro users can recharge their smart cards online and also track their last transactions. “Metro commuters can register their card on the app. They can use it to recharge it online and it will provide the last 10 transactions and the amount debited,” spokesperson said. Commuters can add multiple smartcards on the app.
Internet giant Google provides similar service through its Google Maps service where people can chalk out their travel. Like ‘m Indicator’—a widely used app for train and bus schedules in Mumbai—the app will also provide Bus schedules of BEST, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport, Thane Municipal Transport.
“We don’t see them as a competitor. Our goal is not revenue generation. Ours is aimed to provide value addition to consumers,” the spokesperson reasoned. Another interesting feature of the app is that it would show availability of parking spaces, nearest bus stops and nearest auto stand from the Metro stations.
