The Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Colaba--Bandra--SEEPZ) named as Aqua line has started track laying work from March 5, this year and so far more than two kilometers of track work has been completed, according to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), the project implementing authority. A total of 66.07 kms of track will be installed on the entire corridor.
The MMRC further stated that a total of 10,740 ton of Head Hardened (HH) rails, manufactured by M/s. Nippon, Japan will be utilized for Metro-3 track. All rails have been imported from Japan through M/S Mitsui last year in three lots. The work of installation and construction of track work has been assigned to M/s Larsen & Toubro. The track laying work of Metro-3 is in full swing. Till now total approximately 38 per cent welding work and approximately 20 percent sleepers have been casted. Welding of track in Package 4 and 7 has been totally completed.
Interestingly, in India for the first time such Low Vibration Track (High Attenuation) technology is being used for track works. This system is designed by M/s Sonneville AG, a Swiss company, which will attenuate higher level of noise and vibration in the range of 22VdB (vibration measurement) generated during the operations of the trains on this line. Since the Metro line 3 once ready will be passing beneath various heritage and old residential structures, therefore this system will not only improve the riding comfort for the passengers but also help protect the old heritage structures on ground.
In fact, the sleepers used for tracks are being manufactured in a dedicated sleeper casting factory constructed specially for this purpose at Wadala. A total of 201,600 sleeper blocks will be required for the entire project, as per the MMRC.
Till May end this year on the 33.5 km long Metro line 3, the tunneling work is complete in 6 out of 7 packages, attaining an overall 96 per cent of progress.
