Mumbai Metro III: NGT tells activists to move appropriate authority

Mumbai: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Principal bench, New Delhi, on Thursday disheartened Mumbai-based activists hoping to save Aarey from destruction. Vanshakti, an NGO approached NGT with a prayer to direct the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) undertaking the Metro 3 line (Colaba-Bandra SEEPEZ) from carrying the metro car shed work, as it will destroy the green lungs of city.

The bench surpringly remarked they are not the right authority to pass any judgment. Thus, they should move the appropriate court. Since, the NGT bench declared themselves as not the right authority to pass any judgments, it also refuted to continue the stay which it had earlier issued pertaining to car shed work to MMRCL on May 2018.

Zoru Batena, a Mumbai-based activist told FPJ the petitioners (Vanshakti) requested NGT to at least continue the stay for two more weeks until they move the appropriate court. However, the bench refused, and since the stay has been vacated MMRCL is free to carry out the car shed work at Aarey. “But as NGT has given the liberty to petitioner to move the right court, we are only hoping the other court will give some justice to environmentalist,” he added.
