Mumbai: Saboo Siddiqui maternity and general hospital of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Prabhadevi is in a dilapidated condition.

The hospital witnesses a heavy footfalls, as it is one of the few civic maternity hospitals. However, citizens say, they risk their lives by coming to the hospital, since it has become dangerous for the visitors, owing to the ongoing maintenance work. Bamboo sticks are holding the ward rooms to give support to the ceilings.

A health committee meeting was held on Thursday when Samadhan Sarvankar corprator from Prabhadevi again raised the issue and asked the BMC as to who will be responsible in case of any eventuality. According to him, officials gave no reply. Narendra Kumar Barde, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, said, any work related to public health should not be kept pending.

However, since the election code of conduct is in effect, he assured by next week the repair work will start. Sarvankar had written several letters to the chairman, health committee about the serious condition of the building which is endangering the lives of the patients in this hospital on October 4, 2018.

The municipal administration sent him a reply six months later, which he alleges is unsatisfactory. Sarvankar demanded the hospital should be shifted to another place before the commencement of repairs, since patients continue to visit despite threats to their lives.

“I have been writing to the BMC about this bad condition of this hospital since 2017, but they don’t seem to be concerned about the safety of the people. In today’s health commitee meeting, I have presented all the records of the letters I have written and the photographs of the dilapidated condition. DMC Barde had assured of starting the work on immediate basis,” said Sarvankar.

He further said, “The BMC spends crores of rupees to help people avail free and good medical facilities, but the officials are just passing time and not taking the safety issue seriously.” The building is old and major repairs have been proposed. A tender too has been floated for the repair work. This proposal is pending for the administrative sanction.
