Mumbai: A resident of Bhoiwada, Vishram Karamchand Chaurasiya, 32, was arrested by police on Wednesday afternoon for his ‘plan’ to impersonate Mumbai Police by asking a tailor to sew him a police uniform. According to police, the accused had borrowed a loan from a financial institution to purchase a two-wheeler and was struggling to pay the equated monthly instalments (EMIs). He was being visited by recovery agents who abused and threatened him.
To teach them a lesson, Chaurasiya decided to wear a police uniform and intimidate them. Senior Inspector Ramchandra Jadhav, Bhoiwada police station, said, “The accused, Chaurasiya, went to the tailor on January 29 and demanded that the latter sew a police uniform for him as quickly as possible. The tailor found this demand suspicious as Chaurasiya did not have a police identity card, which has to be produced at the time of the order. He asked Chaurasiya to come the following day and in the meanwhile, he informed police about it.”
On receiving the information, police lay in wait near the tailor’s shop. When Chaurasiya reached there to collect his outfit, they nabbed him. “On questioning, the accused revealed he wanted to teach a lesson to the recovery agents who were abusing him for not paying the loan EMIs on time.
Also, he wanted to show off as he felt the police uniform evokes awe,” said Jadhav, adding, “He was arrested on January 30 and a case filed against him according to the IPC sections 170 (impersonating a public servant), 171 (wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent) and was produced in court on Thursday, which sent him to police custody till February 4.”
