Mumbai: Malad man held for illegal possession of animal skins worth Rs 40 lakh

Kalyan: Thane’s Anti-Extortion Cell on Thursday arrested a 37-year-old man, and a Malad resident Samir Shantaram Jadhav (37), a driver by profession for alleged illegal possession of leopard, tiger, crocodile skins and two elephant tusks worth Rs 40 lakh, which the accused was planning to sell them off in Thane.

Senior police inspector Pradeep Sharma received an information through his reliable informers about animal skins being smuggled. Sharma later passed on the information to senior police officers and who formed a team and laid a trap at Balkumbh-Majiwada road. The Kapurbawadi police have registered an offence against him under sections of Wildlife Protection Act and the officials are further investigating the case.

N T Kadam, Assistant commissioner of police of Thane’s Anti Extortion Cell said, “The accused brought it from a person who resides at Kandivli. We will nab him soon. The international market value of the seized items is worth Rs 2 crore. We are trying to know from where did the accused get it in the first instance.”
