The KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, also known as the Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and KASHISH Film Festival, is an annual LGBTQ event held in Mumbai, since 2010. The festival features films on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer from India and around the world. The KASHISH Film Festival is held successfully for the past eight years in a country where the public hasn’t accepted the LGBTQ community with open arms yet. The festival is considered South Asia’s one of the biggest LGBTQ film festival and this year it will be held between May 23 and 27 at two iconic venues in Mumbai – Liberty Carnival Cinemas and Metro Inox.
In its ninth edition, the theme of The KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is ‘Together, With Pride’. The festival will celebrate pride and the infinite diversities of families, communities, gender, sex, ethnicity and body types. The film extravaganza will screen 140 films from 45 countries, including 33 Indian films. The French film ‘Beats Per Minute’ will be opening the festival on May 23 at Liberty Carnival Cinema. The film won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival in 2017. Indian film ‘Evening Shows’ will the closing film of the festival.
The KASHISH Film Festival will hand out cash prizes of Rs 2.65 lakh in eight film categories – Best Narrative Feature, Best Indian Narrative Short, Best Performance in a Lead Role, K.F. Patil Unity In Diversity Award For Best Documentary Feature, K.F. Patil Unity In Diversity Award For Best Documentary Short, Best International Narrative Short, Qdrishti Film Grant, Riyad Wadia Award For Best Emerging Indian Filmmaker and Best Student Short.
Founded in 2010, KASHISH is the first Indian LGBTQ festival held with approval by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India. Apart from the annual film festival, KASHISH also hosts KASHISH Forward – India’s first travelling campus LGBTQ Film Festival, KASHISH Global – an initiative that facilitates screening of Indian LGBTQ films across the world, KASHISH Chalchitra Utsav – a festival of LGBTQ films in regional languages and Best of KASHISH film screenings.
