The PMGP Colony in Dharavi was thrown into a panic on Tuesday morning after two gunshots were heard. Fearing the worst, the police rushed to the spot only to find that a history sheeter had fired a round in the air with a country-made gun and then shot himself in the arm following an argument with his wife.

The Dharavi police said that the accused, Kalimuddin Sayyed, 32, a resident of Dharavi, has several cases against him, and was once externed from the city limits. The police said that after a marital discord, Sayyed’s wife had recently left him and come to stay with her mother in PMGP Colony.

On Tuesday morning, Sayyed tried to convince her to come back, but she refused. An officer with Dharavi police station said, “This led to an argument between the couple and Sayyed pulled out the gun and fired in the air above her head.” Even before his stunned wife could react, Sayyed turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the left arm.

He fell to the ground bleeding, even as some residents called the police control room. Sayyed was rushed to Sion Hospital, where he is currently under treatment, while the gun has been seized and statements recorded from his wife and other eyewitnesses.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pranaya Ashok, Zone V, said that Sayyed has been booked for attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Arms Act. “He will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital,” he said.
