Mumbai: City has witnessed 230 cases of H1N1, including three deaths have been reported in the first five months of 2019. According to health official, it is highest since 2016. The number of cases have increased from 47 in April to 59 in May. However, doctors claim the outbreak is under control.

While there were no cases reported between January and May in 2018, 70 cases (three deaths) were reported in 2017, and two cases in 2016.

“There has been a 20 per cent rise in H1N1 cases after 87 cases reported in March. In the past, the cases were reduced, but now it has shot up due to late reporting and patients are not opting for timely treatment,” said official.

Swine flu is caused by the H1N1 virus. Its symptoms include fever, cough, body ache, nasal secretion, headache, fatigue, loose motions and weakness. Vaccination is recommended for high-risk groups such as pregnant women, senior citizens, those suffering from renal ailments and with impaired immunity.

Doctors in the city said they have observed a sudden spurt in cases of viral infections following the rain during the last three days.

“There has been a sudden spurt in cases of viral infections, mainly of the upper respiratory tract. Young adults on the move are the worst affected The season can spur transmission of viruses including swine flu virus,”said a senior health official.

Experts said fluctuating temperatures and the changes in strains of the virus are said to be probable reasons behind the untimely outbreak, which is usually prevalent during monsoons and winter.

“Moreover, the depleting immunity among masses and the co-circulation of other seasonal viruses along with swine flu are among the contributing factors. The wide fluctuations in day and night temperatures these days are providing a fitting atmosphere for the virus to spread,” said experts.
