Mumbai: Borivali (W) Kasturba Marg police have arrested five persons, including a woman, for allegedly selling a six-day-old infant. The arrest was made on Saturday. The accused persons have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to police sources, a 32-year-old woman, who stays with her husband and three kids, gave birth to a fourth child, a girl, last week. The woman’s husband is an auto rickshaw driver and a sole earning member of the family. They hardly make the ends meet with a hand-to-mouth, said police. When the woman gave birth to a fourth child, they allegedly wanted to get rid of her. In a bid to do so, they tried to sell the baby to a family member illegally.
When a local social activist learnt about the illegal trade of the infant, she immediately alerted the police. Kasturba Marg police arrested the mother and four others for playing a role in the trade. An investigating officer said, “Five persons were arrested. We have booked them under relevant sections of the IPC and are investigating the matter further.”
During further investigatigation, the accused persons alleged the social activist of having framed them under a fake case for money. The accused woman, who tried to trade her child for money, said during investigation that she wanted her sister-in-law to legally adopt the child, and no money was involved. She said when the neighbours learnt about their financial inability to nurture a fourth child, they suggested her to legally hand over the baby to a well-settled family member. Police investigations are underway and the woman’s relatives have been questioned to ascertain their role in the crime. Till the investigation is not over, a Borivali-based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO).
