Mumbai: Over 1.93 lakh students of both Undergraduate (UG) and Post-Graduate (PG) courses cleared their exams from the Mumbai University (MU) this year. During the annual convocation on Friday, the number of female students who graduated was more than the number of male students. Of the total grads, 1.04 lakh are female students while 88,995 are males. The MU authorities claimed for the last two years, the number of women completing the PG courses is almost twice the number of men opting for the PG.

Also this year, the highest number of students are from the commerce and management faculty followed by science and technology. Suhas Pednekar, Vice- Chancellor (VC) of MU, claimed it is a great achievement to see more number of female students earning degrees from the university. In addition, there is an increase in number of students wanting to study courses like management, finance, banking, administration and business. Pednekar said, “Our effort is to make all services of the university studentfriendly.

We are developing sub-centres at Ratnagiri, Thane and Kalyan and adding systems at these centres for students.” The university has received a grant of Rs20 crore from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a holistic scheme of the centre for development of higher education. The funds will be used for expanding and enhancing infrastructure and equipment. Currently, over nine lakh students are studying in 791 colleges affiliated to MU. Students claim they prefer to study in MU as the education system is quite flexible and economical. Virendra Mahape, a student said, “I completed my Master of Science (MSc) and paid just minimum fees compared to other colleges or private institutes.”

While Sukanya Sodhi, a student said, “All the colleges of the city are affiliated to MU so we ultimately end up graduating from the university. The fees is less and the university has a fixed examination pattern which is known by everyone.” Around 30 students were awarded gold medals for their performance in various examinations.
