The Thane police have arrested father and step-mother of a 17-year-old girl for allegedly abetting and covering up her suicide.

According to Indian Express, the 17-year-old girl ended her life by hanging from a ceiling fan. The girl did so as her parents did not allow her to marry her boyfriend (18). The incident took place on December 20 but the couple was only arrested last week after the girl’s maternal uncle lodged a complaint. After the girl committed suicide the couple hurriedly cremated the girl even after being advised to inform the police.

The girl who was a class 11 student lived with her father and stepmother after her biological mother had allegedly committed suicide 12 years ago. The girl’s mother back then had accused her husband of mentally harassing her. The 17-year-old girl’s father married his second wife six years ago. The girl was in a relationship with an 18-year-old man, but her father and step-mother were against it. The girl’s father also forbade her from speaking to the man.

The girl was confined and her father also ended her school. But the girl remained determined to marry her boyfriend. The girl was upset as her parents continued to oppose which led to the suicide. The girl hanged herself by a ceiling fan and left behind a suicide note which stated that she held her parents responsible for her actions. A police officer told the leading daily, “After they discovered her body, the stepmother held the girl’s legs while the father cut the dupatta suspending her from the ceiling. They hurriedly cremated her the day after.”

Later a  neighbour contacted the girl’s maternal uncle, who then lodged a complaint. The cops arrested the couple under sections of abetment to suicide and have been remanded to judicial custody.
