Mumbai: V P Road police have arrested three people, including an employee of a jewellery shop which was looted on May 20. Police have recovered Rs 1.1 crore worth diamonds out of Rs 2.47 crore worth diamonds which were stolen. Malay Mehta (56), a diamond businessman who runs a jewellery shop in Zaveri Bazar, on Thursday has complained to the police regarding theft in his shop. When V P Road police visited the shop they found no traces of forced entry.
The gate of the shop and the diamond safe, kept inside the shop was intact. It was clear that the safe was opened with duplicate keys and that it was a job of an insider. When the police checked the CCTV footage, they found two men has come to the shop at night and opened the gate. The duo, are later seen to open the safe with the keys and took away the diamonds worth Rs 2.47 crore.
During the investigations, police were able to identify one of the thieves who was seen in the CCTV footage. He was identified as Naresh Patel (33) who is a diamond treader and a resident of Nalasopara. A police team left for Nalasopara immediately and Naresh was taken into custody. After grilling Naresh, police managed to trace the second thief Tejas Saravayya (32), a resident of Bhyander, and recovered Rs 1.1 crore worth of diamonds from him.
After thorough interrogation, they both broke down and said the duplicate keys were given to them by Tarang alias Ronny Parikh (28) who works in the same shop and is a close associate of the owner. V P Road police then wasted no time and immediately arrested Ronny, a resident of Borivali. Ronny confessed his role in the crime and said, one of the owners had gone out of town and at that time, he had made the duplicate keys on the sly. All the three accused were produced in court and were sent in police custody till June 1.
