As temperatures continue to soar, the residents of South Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade are facing trouble not because of soaring temperatures but due to scarce water supply over the last month.
According to DNA, around 5,000 flats in Cuffe Parade are facing water problems, which has forced them to procure water. The residents have said that this has led to a jump in their bills as they are not getting sufficient water. Padmakar Nandekar, secretary general of Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) told the leading daily, “There have been issues in water supply for a year now. In August 2018, the problem increased when they changed the timings of water supply. However, for the past one month ever since the pressure has reduced, the problem has become grave.”
The residents of the affected buildings have said that around 5 to 10 tankers come to buildings each day. Rajesh Dalmia, resident of Jolly Maker III told DNA, “In our building, we get around 10 tankers on some days. The problem is so grave on some days. What is the point of paying taxes when we do not get enough water; people living in slums get all the water. Every month our expenses are increasing by Rs 1,000.”
The Cuffe Parade residents have said that they would get water supply every day for two hours which has now reduced to one hour. Nandekar told DNA, “However, it is the pressure that has created the problem. The supply comes for one hour but the pressure is so low that if it filled 10,000-litre tank in one hour earlier, now it fills up only 6,000 litre.”
