Six people, including 3 women, were killed and 36 were injured when a portion of a busy footover bridge (FOB) near iconic CSMT railway station here collapsed on Thursday during the peak rush hour, once again raising questions over the safety of such pedestrian structures.

In July last year, portion of a road over-bridge had collapsed in suburban Andheri. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had then announced a joint safety audit of all 445 bridges in Mumbai. Following the order, the railways, the BMC and the IIT-Bombay had conducted a safety audit. The audit report of bridges and foot-over-bridges (FOB) revealed that which bridges are in dangerous condition and in dire need of reconstruction. In the commercial capital of the country, in which lakhs of people commute through bridges. The lives of over 2 crore people who regularly commute on these bridges are being put on stake by the city’s authorities.

  9. Bridge at Chirag Nagar, near Mukund Society, Ghatkopar West
  10. FOB near Renaissance Hotel, near Nitie Gate, Powai
  11. Walbhat Bridge over nullah Goregaon (east)
  12. SVP Road Bridge Kandivali (west)
  13. Hari Masjid nullah Bridge Sakinaka
  14. Chirag Nagar Bridge in LBS Road Ghatkopar
  15. Hans Bhurga Marg, SCLR
