A 50-year-old Maulana from Nagapada was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl in 2017. According to Mumbai Mirror, the incident took place in 2017, in maulana’s room at the local Mosque, where the victim would study along with her sister. The accused has been identified as Abdulla Gulam. The sessions court held Abdulla Gulam guilty under several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act and, under the Indian Penal Code. During the trial, the victim’s 13-year-old sister and father turned hostile, while her mother, the complainant, held her ground during the trial. The case was also supported by medical evidence.
While explaining the incident, the victim’s mother said that her daughter (victim) one evening came home running. Later, on being asked, she narrated her entire ordeal. The victim told her mother how the accused Maulana would often touch her inappropriately and had distracted her sister with a mobile phone after class while both of them were in his room in the mosque and then raped her. After this, the victim’s mother took her to the hospital and later an FIR was registered. The accused was arrested nine days later.
