In a shocking incident, on Tuesday a 79-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by a gang of robbers in her Mumbai’s Matunga home. The woman was strangulated to death after she tried to fight the robbers.
According to Mumbai Mirror, the 79-year-old woman was identified as Vasanta Lakshminarayanan Iyer, who lived alone in her ground-floor flat of a four-storeyed building in Matunga Labour camp. Iyer stayed alone in the house after her two daughters moved out after marriage. The Shahu Nagar police have registered a robbery and a murder case against unidentified people. The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the 79-year-old woman was found in an unconscious state by her maid with a dupatta wound around her neck, and the house in disarray.
The maid tried to revive Iyer but had to call in a neighbour. Later the police were informed and the old woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Later the post-mortem report revealed that the cause of death was strangulation. The cops are suspecting that the old woman was killed after she tried to fight the robbers. The police also suspect that more than one person was involved in the crime. A senior police officer told the leading daily, “The ornaments she was wearing were also stolen. And by looking at the condition of the cupboard, it looks like the robbers also stole the cash and other valuables. We have registered a case and are scrutinising the CCTV footage from the area to trace the accused.”
