Mumbai: A cricket betting syndicate was unearthed in a Juhu hotel room and three were arrested for placing bets on an IPL match played between two teams. Crime branch officials had seized phones and SIM cards registered on fake names and equipment worth Rs5 lakh. The case was filed at Juhu police station.
According to police, they received inputs about a few cricket bookies placing bets on an IPL match in a Juhu hotel. A team raided the hotel and arrested three men, Manoj, Rajiv and Nitesh. The trio used to provide a website link, along with an ID and password, to login after the person to pay the betting amount. After logging into, one could place bets to be notified to the bookies.
Police seized mobile phones and SIM cards of different telecom operators, registered on fake documents. The phones and SIM cards were arranged by Rishi Daryanani and Mahesh Khemalani, the accused’s accomplices. They are still absconding, said a senior police officer. Juhu police have booked the accused under relevant IPC sections and are probing.
