Mumbai: With the arrest of two persons, Amboli police claims to have busted another a betting racket on Tuesday night. The two were caught redhanded placing and accepting bets on a match between India and Bangladesh in the ongoing Cricket World Cup.
According to police, on a tip-off about a betting racket being operated in an Andheri (W) building, a team raided the 8th floor of Metropolis CHS at JP Road at 9.30pm and arrested 2 persons.
The accused, Chandkishor Khanna alias Mamaji (58) and Ruchit Arora (43), were caught redhanded accepting bets on the India-Bangladesh cricket match of the ongoing World Cup from their mobile phones.
Khanna, aka Mamaji, is a notorious bookie, has been operating in Mumbai for over a decade, said police. He was wanted in more than 10 cases and operates the syndicate in the garb of a business establishment, Bharat Gaikwad, a senior inspector of Amboli police station, said.
Police seized 4 cellphones worth Rs97,600, 4 diaries, eight debit cards, six SIM cards and Rs17,600 in cash.
Police arrested the duo and booked them under relevant sections of the IPC for cheating and forgery, and the Indian Telegraph Act and the Maharashtra Gambling Act. They were produced in a court and remanded in police custody for 4 days.
