Mumbai can be global if it’s slum-free: CM Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai: Ensuring a slum-free Mumbai alone will make Mumbai a truly global city, Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday, while addressing the half-day-long conclave titled ‘Mumbai 2.0’.  He asserted that Development Plan (DP) for the first time has unlocked the land potential to provide one million affordable houses in the metropolis.

“The new DP will change the face of housing in Mumbai. Providing good housing and good life to the people, keeps me going,” the CM reiterated  Leading policymakers such as Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu and Amitabh Kant and corporate honchos like Uday Kotak, Adi Godrej, S N Subrahmanyan, G V Sanjay Reddy, Kalpana Morparia. Sachin Tendulkar and Pulela Gopichand from the sporting world were also present on the occasion.

Listing out the various infrastructure projects undertaken by the government in Mumbai, Fadnavis said all the current ongoing projects have been conceived nearly two decades ago, but his government is merely executing them like the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea link (MTHL) and other infrastructure projects.

Also the work of different metro lines in Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR) is in progress. “We have completed 250 kilometres of metro projects and some of the project work started in within a year. In order to achieve the project deadline war rooms have been set up and the concerned stake holders have been asked to keep a close watch and take decisions there itself,” stated Fadnavis.

Taking credits for his work, Fadnavis also remarked that because of him the centre set standards for discharge of sewer in the sea. And due to his efforts from last one and half years, Mumbai city’s sewage treatment plant work has progressed which was lagging due to want of approvals from centre. The Chief Minister claimed, “Not even a single drop of sewer water will flow in the sea, since the standard discharge norms have been set up. The city seashores and river will not give any more foul smell, once the STPs are constructed.”

Taking a dig at earlier Congress-Nationalist Congree Party government, the current CM said, “We have officers who have a great ability to work, but the then government was not supportive. What could not happen in last 10 to 15 years, now our government is doing.”

Besides, the CM remarked, “Unlike other cities like Bangalore, Karnataka, Mumbai is not a single brand city but known for multi brand. Mumbai is known as a finance capital, a hub for Bollywood, culture, and for various other expertise, which should be utilised for the city’s development.”
