Mumbai: The protest planned by engineers of the bridges department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday was been called off by the joint committee of the BMC engineers’ union and the Municipal Engineers’ Association, after a series of meetings with the new civic chief, Praveen Pardeshi.

“We met the new BMC commissioner with three main demands — 50 engineers will be sent to the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) Bombay for 15 days’ training in bridge inspection,” said Sainath Rajadakshya, president of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers’ Union.

“Our other demands were that vacancies should be filled soon and if any such incidents (such as collapses) occur in the future, no action should be taken until the departmental investigation and inquiry are completed. The new commissioner accepted our demands, hence we called off our protest,” he said. – Staff Reporter
