Six persons were killed and over 30 injured after a section of a foot overbridge at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus collapsed. The bridge connects the area near the Times of India building with the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station. It is also referred to as the ‘Kasab bridge’ as the 26/11 Mumbai attack terrorist passed through it.
However, this is not the first incident of the bridge collapsing in Mumbai. Here’s a look at the earlier incidents:
- Elphinstone Stampede (2017)
In September 2017, a stampede broke out on a railway bridge at Elphinstone Station bridge during peak office hours where at least 23 people killed and over 30 were seriously injured. The stampede broke out after just a 20-minute rain, on the foot over-bridge linking two of the busiest stations in Mumbai — Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations.
The stampede took place when four trains arrived at the same time and a crowd surged over the narrow bridge connecting the two stations. Sudden heavy rain made a bad situation worse, as a few slipped, leading to the tragedy. Witnesses said there were rumours of the old bridge collapsing which caused panic and chaos.
- Andheri Bridge Collapse (2018)
Part of a 40-year-old Gokhale bridge at the Andheri station collapsed amid heavy rain on 3 July 2018 last year and five people were injured. The bridge, running east to west over the Andheri station, crashed early morning, ripping off overhead wires which were left on the tracks. The bridge crash damaged a portion of the platform roof, blocked railway lines and damaged high-tension electric wires and overhead power equipment. At least two persons were reported dead in the incident.
- Foot overbridge collapses near Mankhurd (2018)
A portion of a foot overbridge in Mumbai collapsed near Mankhurd on Sion-Panvel Highway on 7 October 2018. A BMC Disaster Control Room official said that the foot overbridge was being dismantled by the Public Works Department when the incident happened. No casualties or injuries were reported.
- Foot overbridge staircase collapses near Charni Road station (2017)
A portion of a dilapidated FOB near Charni Road station collapsed on 14 October 2017. A 67-year-old man was injured in the incident. The injured man – identified as Dindore Dixit – was rushed to the nearby Saifee Hospital.
- Mahad bridge collapse (2016)
This was not quite in Mumbai but a big tragedy near the city. 42 people went missing after a bridge collapse after a British-era bridge was washed away near Mahad on the Mumbai-Goa national highway on 4 August 2016. According to reports, nearly 40 people lost their lives.
