Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has introduced the early bird scheme (EBS) for the property tax payers. According to this scheme, the property tax payers will get some offers and discounts on paying the tax before the due date or a few months in advance.
After the implementation of EBS, the civic body has collected Rs 2,813 crore in the last four years. In return, the corporation has given benefits to the tune of Rs 50.12 crore to the taxpayers for paying the tax before time.
This has prompted the BMC to continue with the scheme even this year. After the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), BMC is compeltely dependent on property tax for its revenues.
This scheme is aimed at encouraging residential and commercial establishments to pay the property tax early and get some concessions. The scheme was first introduced in 2010. For filing EBS, the BMC has given a concession ranging from one to four per cent to the tax payers. Taxpayers who pay before June 30 are entitled to rebate of two per cent.
