Maharashtra sees 9,558 fresh COVID-19 cases, 147 fatalities
Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 9,558 new coronavirus positive cases and 147 fatalities, a drop of 24 compared to the previous day, taking the tally of infections to 61,22,893 and the toll to 1,23,857, the state health department said.
A total of 8,899 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries in Maharashtra to 58,81,167 so far, leaving the state with 1,14,625 active cases.
Maharashtra's recovery rate now stands at 96.05 per cent while the COVID-19 fatality rate is 2.02 per cent and the case positivity rate 14.2 per cent, it said.

664 COVID-19 cases, nine deaths reported in city
Mumbai recorded 664 new coronavirus cases and nine deaths on Wednesday which took the city's caseload to 7,26,284 and death toll to 15,573, the civic body said.
The city had reported 489 and 453 new infections on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday instructed district collectors to chart out a plan to ensure industries could continue operating amid a possible third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Thackeray, in a virtual meeting with all district collectors, said they should convene a meeting of the big industries in the districts and guide them in the preparations to continue their operations even during a third wave.

Kumar Ramsay, eldest of Ramsay Brothers, passes away
Filmmaker Kumar Ramsay, known for penning most of the Ramsay Brothers' horror films including Rishi Kapoor-starrer "Khoj", passed away on Thursday due to cardiac arrest. He was 85.
Kumar breathed his last at his residence in Hiranandani here, his eldest son Gopal told PTI.
"He passed away due to cardiac arrest, today morning around 5:30 AM. He passed away very quietly. The funeral will take place around 12 PM. We are waiting for the priest to arrive," Gopal said.
Kumar was the son of producer FU Ramsay and the eldest of the seven brothers.
USCIRF condemns death of Stan Swamy
A federal American body has condemned the "deliberate neglect" by the government of India that it said led to the death of Jesuit priest Stan Swamy.
Swamy, 84, who was arrested last year under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, died at a Mumbai hospital on Monday.
"Father Stan Swamy's death is a stark reminder of the egregious and ongoing persecution of India's religious minority communities," Nadine Maenza, chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) said in a statement on Wednesday.
