Mumbai: Alert 50-year-old woman helps cop nab chain-snatcher

BHAYANDAR: Displaying an act of exemplary courage and alertness, a 50-year-old housewife turned the tables on a chain-snatcher and got him arrested by Kashimira police on Thursday night. The woman, Urmiladevi Gupta, not only resisted the chain-snatching attempt by the robber, she also alerted an on-duty cop who chased down the culprit.

The accused has been identified as Mahesh Vaahegavkar (31), a resident of Vasai in Palghar. Police said the incident was reported from the Vijay Park of Mira Raod at 9.30pm when the couple was taking a post-dinner stroll.

While there has been an alarming rise in chain snatching cases in the twin-city, police are probing the involvement of the accused and trying to ascertain if had a crime record. A case under sections 392 and 511, IPC, was lodged against the accused, who was sent to custody.
