Mumbai: Students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) are now scared of eating food from their own mess. The reason? Over 25 girl students complained of food poisoning after consuming sweets on Saturday. They received treatment at the hospital on the campus, and were discharged on Sunday. The food samples were sent for the lab testing.

After the dinner on Saturday, the students began complaining of vomiting and stomach ache after eating sweets. Then, they complained to the warden who informed the IIT-B administration. The troubled girls were told to immediately report to the college hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

Obviously, the students are now scared to eat the mess food. One of the affected students said, “We got scared when our friends vomited after the dinner when we returned to our rooms. After the treatment, they are doing fine now. But, the incident has scared us. We won’t eat from the mess now.”

Fearing a repeat, at a time when the exams are scheduled to begin in May, the students have pledged not to eat the hostel meal. “We have been eating at the mess, but so many students fell ill. It means something is messy. We can’t take the risk of eating at the hostel. Most of us come from far-off districts. Our health is prime concern. As the exams are approaching fast, we cannot take a chance with our health.”

The mess has been shut temporarily and the food samples have been sent for the lab testing. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials too are inspecting the mess for hygiene standards. Commenting on the issue, the IIT-B spokesperson said, “We attended to the students and provided them medical care. The girls are doing fine. We are inspecting the mess. The cause of food poisoning is yet to be ascertained.”
