Mumbai: A week after the completion of the admission to degree college, students are still claiming seats for self-financed courses even though there is no vacancy in well-known colleges.
College authorities claim it has led to overcrowding, as admissions to undergraduate (UG) courses are over and there are no vacant seats left.
Students are visiting degree colleges everyday to secure a seat for courses like Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Arts (BA) and Mass Media (BMM).
But the courses have a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 120 seats in every college. The seats are full with some students held on the waitlist, as there is no vacancy, according to colleges.
The students on the waitlist are questioning if they are going to be allotted a seat. Farukh Saberwala, a student, said, “Why are we kept on the waitlist if there is no availability of seats? Why are we made to wait if there won’t be an allotment?”
Mughda Kulkarni, another student, said, “We are going to colleges everyday just to check if we have been allotted seats. The college should inform us clearly if there are no seats.”
The authorities claim the students have already been informed that the waitlisted admissions are purely based on the availability of vacant seats. A principal of a South Mumbai college, said,
“The students are well aware of the fact that the waitlisted admissions will only be allotted if a vacancy is created. We can’t do anything if there are no seats for certain courses.”
Adding extra seats or starting an additional class is viable, claimed colleges. A teacher said, “There is already overcrowding in the reputed colleges. We cannot add an extra class to accommodate more students. The colleges don’t have necessary infrastructure or resources.”
Admission to degree courses that began in the last week of May completed on June 27, with the announcement of three lists.
