A 27-year-old man fed his three children ice-cream laced with rat poison after a fight with his wife. While one of his children, aged five, died at Sion Hospital, the other two are being treated for food poisoning. The Mankhurd police have registered a case of murder against the man.
The accused has been identified as Mohammed Ali Naushad Ansari, 27, a daily wage worker from Shiv Shankar chawl in Mankhurd. The police said Ansari, after a fight with his wife, got worried about who would take care of his children and resorted to the act.
A police official said Ansari and his wife Naziya used to have frequent quarrels. Between June 21 and June 25, the couple fought more often. On June 25, Naziya left the house and went to her sister’s chawl in Baiganwadi, Govandi. In a fit of rage, Ansari fed his three children poisoned ice-cream. Ansari claimed he was frustrated as Naziya often went to her sister’s house, leaving their children in his care.
The police said when the children fell sick, he admitted them to Sion hospital. The police officer said when cops intervened, he falsely claimed that the children ate contaminated ice-cream mistakenly. On June 29, Alishan, 5, succumbed. The police questioned the family and relatives again. Naziya revealed that Ansari had called her sister informing about poisoning the children.
Senior police inspector Prakash Chougule confirmed registering a murder case against Ansari under sections 302, 307 and 328 of the Indian Penal Code. He said, “We have registered a case on Naziya’s complaint. The accused fled after the incident. We have launched a search operation.”
