Mumbai: 5 more persons held for rioting at Trombay

Mumbai: Five more persons have been arrested in the Cheetah camp riot incident at Trombay on Tuesday. According to Shahaji Umap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6), “We have arrested five more persons in the rioting incident on Tuesday. Total 29 arrests have been made so far.”

They have been arrested for attempt to murder, rioting, armed with deadly weapon, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty of the Indian Penal Code and for mischief causing damage under the Damage to Public Property Act.

A mob had allegedly set a police van on fire, damaged two police vehicles and vandalised Trombay police station on Saturday night. The accused Arvind Chinwa (20) had put up an objectionable morphed picture of a religious structure on Facebook on Saturday. A mob of 100 persons from Trombay had protested and complained about it to police. They also pelted stones at two other police vans and the police station causing damage to the window panes.

Subsequently, another mob came to the police station and demanded that Chinwa be handed over to them. Police officials were also hurt during the incident. 100 armed personnel were deployed in and around Trombay which is near Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) headquarters.
