Mumbai: Upset with the government for not meeting their demands, 43 families from Gavliwada in Vengurla, Konkan, boycotted the polling. According to sources, around 43 families comprising 217 voters, which includes 20 first-time voters, stayed away as they were upset with the government for not resolving their long pending demands.
These families have been struggling to get their names on property cards which are called ‘saat-bara’ (7/12). The district officials said there is little they could have done to prevent them. Dilip Pandharpatte, the collector, Sindhudurg, said, “The district officers visited every village prior to elections and requested citizens to use their voting rights. But if they stay away, there is little we can do.”
