Mumbai: Three days after a 79-year-old senior citizen was found murdered at her Matunga residence, Shahu Nagar police have arrested four people on Friday and booked them for robbery and murder, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Police have also recovered gold ornaments which were reported missing from the senior citizen’s residence.

According to Shahu Nagar police, the deceased Vasanta Lakshmi Narayanan Iyer used to stay alone on the ground floor of a four-storey building at Matunga labour camp. The incident came to light on Tuesday evening, when Iyer’s housekeeper came to work and found the senior citizen lying on the floor with a dupatta tied across her neck.

She immediately alerted the neighbours, who informed the police and took Iyer to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Shahu Nagar police registered a case of murder and suspected robbery as Iyer’s jewellery worth Rs 7.5 lakh was missing. Police immediately began investigating the case and formed four teams. “

Police questioned nearly 70-80 people who were probable suspects in the murder. However, during questioning, a couple was missing from the lot. When police traced them strolling in the area on Thursday evening, they panicked and confessed to their crime, during the interrogation,” said Vikram Deshmane, deputy commissioner of police (zone 5).

The couple, Akbar (35) and Sameera Shaikh (34), was arrested on Friday morning, who revealed of the two other accomplices. Based on their revelation, hours later, Shahu Nagar police arrested the other two other accused, Mohammad Hasan Patari (25) and Muhammad Ainul Haq (29), both residents of Mahim, Reti Bunder.

Police said, the plan to rob and kill Iyer was hatched by Akbar and Sameera Shaikh, who were deep in debt and were struggling to repay the loan. Since the Shaikh couple used to often visit Iyer, they knew she used to stay alone and had enough ornaments to repay their debt.

“On Tuesday, the Shaikh couple and their two accomplices visited Iyer, following which they strangled her to death with a dupatta and fled with the ornaments which they removed from her body and the cupboard,” said DCP Deshmane. Police have recovered the ornaments stolen from Iyer.

The arrested accused were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder (section 302), robbery (section 379) and house trespassing (section 449). The arrested accused will be produced in a local magistrate court on Saturday.
