Mumbai: A 36-year-old woman delivered a baby girl at the Virar railway station near here on Thursday morning after she went into labour on her way for a regular medical check-up, police said. According to a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official, the woman, Sweety Sheikh, who was travelling in a local train, began feeling labour pain at around 7.15 am.
Sweety, a resident of Ghatkopar, got off the train at Virar, where she was escorted to the Government Railway Police (GRP) office located in the station premises, he said. “Lady head constable Priyanka Mane rushed to her help and arranged curtains to cover the office, where Sweety delivered the baby after some time,” the official said.
“Mane then escorted the newly-delivered baby and her mother to the nearby Sanjivani Hospital where both were doing fine,” the official said. The baby’s father, Amant Kul Sheikh, thanked RPF and GRP staffers for their timely help. He said the baby was slated to born in mid-June.
