Thane: A 20-year-old state and national-level carrom player, Janhavi More, died after being hit by a tanker while she was crossing a road in Dombivli on Sunday.
The incident took place at the Palava City Junction in Dombivli (E) on Sunday evening when she and a friend were going to Dombivli to meet other friends. Janhavi, in her five-year career, had won 68 medals, spanning championships from district to national levels. She had won 13 national level tournaments in the under-21 year age category.
A grief-stricken Sunil More, Janhavi’s father, said, 笛anhavi痴 friend Aashay Chinkutkar informed us that my daughter died after being hit by truck. She was crossing the road at Palava Junction. A traffic constable had given the stop signal to vehicles, allowing pedestrians to cross. Even as my daughter was in the midst of crossing, the constable signalled ‘go’ to vehicles. It was at this time that a speeding truck hit my daughter, killing her.”
More demanded action against the traffic constable who was negligent in his duty. “Owing to his mistake, I lost my daughter. Had he been diligent and looking in all directions, this lapse would not have occurred.”Dombivli-Manpada Police have arrested the truck driver, identified as Rohidas Batule, and booked him for negligence causing death and rash driving. Police are also probing the role of the constable negligence in the case.
Senior Inspector Dadahari Choure of Manpada police station said, “We arrested the driver, produced him in court and he is in judicial custody. The allegation made by the woman’s family is baseless. Our probe has not found any negligence by the traffic constable in the case”.
