Mumbai: A ticket-checker who was suspended for manhandling a commuter at Bandra station two weeks ago, got into a verbal spat with another commuter at the same station on Thursday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, Deepak Pandurang Rane was standing at Platform 1 on Bandra station, when he stopped a woman and asked for her ticket. The commuter showed her pass, but the TC was not satisfied and asked her to show the photo-identity card linked to the pass.

“Since the commuter was not carrying her PAN card, which she had shown while purchasing the pass, she showed her driving licence and a soft copy of the PAN card. But the official refused to see it and asked her to either show the hard copy or pay a fine,” said the eyewitness.

“The commuter eventually agreed to pay the fine and asked the official to accompany her to the ATM, but he told her to come to the ticket-checkers’ office instead. But she refused to go to his office,” he added.

Meanwhile, commuters observed that the TC was not wearing his coat and had hidden his ID card in his shirt. “His appearance raised doubts in the minds of onlookers, who quickly gathered around. Upon seeing the crowd, the official simply walked away with the woman’s pass,” said one of the commuters.

After the TC left, some people from the crowd spoke to the commuter and advised her to continue her journey. “We even tried to catch the attention of an RPF official during the commotion, but to no avail. A few minutes later, the TC returned to the platform, stopped two other persons and took them to the cabin,” he added.

Ravinder Bhakar, chief public relations officer, Western Railway, said they had penalised the official and have removed him from his current role. “We have issued a penalty against Rane and also moved him to a non-passenger facing role from tomorrow. He will not be assigned ticket-checking duty until the department enquiry is over,” he said.
