Bhayandar: As the Thane (rural) police stepped up a vigil for the upcoming LS election, two peresons were arrested for possessing swords in the wee hours of Sunday at Mira Road.

According to police, a night patrolling team, led by sub inspector Suresh Patil under the supervision of senior inspector Shekhar Dombe, intercepted a suspiciously moving SUV near an eatry on the Mira-Bhayandar road. When they failed to give satisfactory replies, their vehicle was thoroughly checked.

The occupants were taken into custody on the recovery of the two swords. The accused duo has been identified as Durgesh Singh (32) and Vinay Ladhwa (19), both residents of Kanjur Marg, said the official.

“Their vehicle was impounded. The duo was booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act,” Patil said. They were produced in the Thane sessions court, which remanded them in police custody till Wednesday, he said. The official added further investigations were on to ascertain the purpose of their armed visit to the city.
