Mumbai: Dongri police arrested two men for killing a 35-year-old man on March 25 over a trivial issue. The two accused had slammed a cement block on his head, killing him instantly. Police detected the case with the help of a dog squad since he was carrying no document or wallet establishing his identity.
The dead body of an unidentified man was found lying near Wadi Bunder railway yard on Monday. The man’s face was smashed with a cement block. Dongri police registered a case of murder against unknown person/s and started investigating the case.
Abhishek Trimukhe, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1) said, “The dead body found in the railway yard was extremely difficult to identify, as no wallet or documents were found on him. Suspecting, he was a local, the dog squad was summoned to the spot, which led us to a nearby slum at Bhaucha Dhakka.
When the deceased man’s photo was circulated in the area, it was revealed that his name was Abdul Rehman, a resident of Thiruvananthapuram, who was doing odd jobs on the docked ships.” Further investigation revealed Rehman used to spend time with two men, both locals of Bhaucha Dhakka and often had drinks and dinner with them.
The Dongri police then checked the CCTV camera footage, which showed two men coming out of Sameer Bar, with Rehman in tow. “While the trio was under the influence of alcohol, Rehman was completely sloshed. The trio then headed towards the railway yard,” said DCP Trimukhe. Within 24 hours of registering a case, the two accused were arrested.
While one was held from Bhaucha Dhakka, the other was arrested from Navi Mumbai, police said. The arrested duo, identified as Shivanand Kattali and Raja Haldar, both colleagues of Rehman, used to hang out together on a daily basis. The arrested duo said, on Sunday night, they had a fight with Rehman over financial issues, which later escalated after Rehman began abusing.
Kattali lost his cool and smashed his head with a cement block which was lying near the railway yard. After killing Rehman, the two accused returned home. Both accused were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for murder (section 302) and common intention (section 34). They were produced in a local magistrate court and sent to police custody till April 3.
