Tejo Charuvilayal, a 26-year-old electrical engineer who suffered burn injuries during vessel MT Maharaja Agrasen flash fire on April 13, succumbed to his injuries at Mumbai’s Masina Hospital on Wednesday. Tejo is the second person to lose his life in the tragedy, which occurred near Mumbai’s Jawahar Dweep. Yellow Gate Police have registered an accidental death report in the matter and started an enquiry.
MT Maharaja Agrasen arrived near Jawahar Dweep on April 9, carrying oil from Saudi Arabia. The vessel was anchored near jetty number 4 on April 13. During discharge of oil from the vessel, an explosion took place causing fire. The crew reacted quickly and bright the flames under the control but three crew members were severely hurt.
The ship had 39 members on board, of whom chief engineer Prakash Patyal, 54, from Karnataka succumbed to his injuries on April 15. Second engineer Subhash Ravthan is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Earlier, the Shipping Corporation of India released a statement after the tragedy that three crewmembers, who were hospitalised, were working in the Inert Gas Room when the flash fire broke out.
