Mumbai : More than 50 shops were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at Crawford Market on Sunday morning. The incident occurred in the wee hours when the market was shut and only employees of the shops were sleeping on the premises. The Fire Control room received a call at around 5.23 am and by 5.34, ten fire engines had rushed to the spot. While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the fire officials confirmed that most of the shops destroyed sold cosmetics. The fire, which occurred in the central region of the huge market, also destroyed huge stocks of packaging material stored on the premises.
The fire officials brought the fire under control by 8.30 am after which the cooling operations were initiated. Since the fire occurred in the wee hours, nobody was injured in the mishap. PTI ADDS: BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Mumbai mayor Snehal Ambekar visited the spot and interacted with shop owners. Some of them alleged that their repeated calls to 101 went unanswered and they had to finally report the fire to the police.
