Bhayandar: The monsoon is yet to mark its proper arrival, but thanks to the approaching election season, it’s already raining promises and assurances for the residents of the twin-city. On Tuesday, the BJP-governed Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) issued a press release stating that the 20 per cent water cut imposed in the twin-city will be rolled back from 10, July on the virtue of the assurance given by the state government authorities of augmenting the quantum of water supply by 35 MLD which the MBMC receives from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
The decision followed after a delegation comprising Mayor Dimple Patil, municipal commissioner Balaji Khatgaonkar, legislator Narendra Mehta, city engineer Shivaji Barkund, met ater resources minister Girish Mahajan and industries minister Subash Desai at the latter’s office in Mumbai on Tuesday. It should be noted that, as against the requirement of over 225 MLD, the twin-city having a populace of more than 14 lakh has a total supply of 176MLD provided jointly by the MIDC and STEM water supply authority. Owing to leakages, unaccounted supply and theft, the actual supply hovers at an average of 170 MLD, officials said.
After a span of six years, the MBMC on the virtue of the new 75 MLD water supply scheme had lifted the ban on issuance of new waterlines from May 1, 2017. However the actual supply from the 75 mld had been restricted to 40 mld. Presently, there are more than 34,500 residential and 3,200 commercial water lines in the twin-city.
