Mumbai : After a series of technical glitches on the Monorail, the production of the rakes will restart from August. Alarmed by repeated technical glitches on its trains, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority had asked manufacturer Scomi Engineering to put on hold production of five rakes.

MMRDA had asked Scomi Engineering not to continue with manufacturing the last five trains with the same model and quality of equipment or machinery that were installed in the first 10 rakes, which are here in Mumbai. “We’ve almost finalised whatever modifications are to be made, so we will give a go-ahead and they (Scomi Engineering) will start resume production by August,” confirmed UPS Madan, MMRDA. A senior official of MMRDA added that the production of the rakes is expected to be completed by the year end.

The senior official added, “The new rakes will be used when the Phase-II of the monorail project is commissioned which is likely by March 2016. Currently, the rolling stock is more than sufficient to handle the ridership on Phase-I.”

The services of the country’s first

Monorail between Chembur and Wadala began in February 2014 and since

then it has been facing many technical glitches.

Currently, the daily ridership on the Monorail is around 17,000 to 18,000 and the MMRDA is expecting a quantum jump only after the Phase-II is commissioned as it will be linking very congested areas and the distance will be much larger.
