Mumbai : After a Department of Telecom panel submitted its finding that there is no conclusive evidence about the dangers of radiation from mobile towers and that greater efforts should be made to combat the disinformation, the improvements committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has permitted the setting up of new mobile towers. The only rider is that the distance between two mobile towers must be 100 metres.
The proposals passed by the improvements committee say that the permission of 70 per cent of the residents has to be obtained to set up a mobile antenna. The top floor residents cannot veto the proposal.
Mobile towers cannot be set up in schools and hospitals but they can be set up within three metres of these institutions. Earlier, a 100 metre gap was stipulated.
But a structural audit report is a must before mobile towers can be set atop a building. The proposal will be discussed in the civic house on Wednesday.
