MMRDA plans integrated parking facility in BKC

MMRDA plans integrated parking facility in BKC

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will soon initiate stringent action against vehicles parked haphazardly by the roadside in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), said R A Rajeev, commissioner of MMRDA. “A plan is being prepared, which will be implemented strictly, within four to five months. It involves creating a BKC traffic police patrol system, which will have towing vans doing the rounds of BKC and acting against errant drivers. Every van will have a regional transport officer (RTO), traffic policeman and an MMRDA official.”

Keeping in mind the upcoming development projects in the BKC — the development of the conventional centre, underground bullet train terminus, the International Financial Centre (IFC) and two metro corridors — plenty of traffic is on the cards. A strict traffic management plan is the necessity of the hour. The BKC will not look like Mumbai. Under the traffic management plan, footpaths and signage will be improved,” said Rajeev.

The MMRDA will also introduce a smart parking system which it will manage without bringing in private contractors. “An app will be developed to regulate car parking, which will provide details like how many parking spots are available and what vehicles are parked. Soon, every road in the BKC will have signs which indicate the availability of parking space. Currently, the MMRDA owns two multi-storeyed and one underground car parking lots in the BKC alone. Apart from introducing the integrated parking facility, the authority mulls plan to make all BKC roads one-way.
