Mumbai : The BMC had launched joint action along with Mumbai police in 25 dilapidated buildings of Sion Koliwada Vidhansabha area, to cut off their water and electricity supply. However, the BMC action was thwarted by MLA Captain R Tamil Selvan, who rushed to the spot and assured the BMC that the residents will make temporary arrangements soon.
The buildings house 1,250 rooms and over 2,500 Punjabi families who travelled to Mumbai from what is now Pakistan during Partition. Hence the area is called Punjabi Camp Area.
Joint staff about 500 BMC officials and police personnel had initiated action on Tuesday afternoon. However, on Selvan’s request, they restored the water and electricity connection. Selvan also assured the group of about 2,000 citizens gathered at the site that the state is clearing redevelopment of the buildings.
