Mumbai : The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday rescued a two-year-old girl from a beggar near the Andheri railway station. The girl was kidnapped in September 2014 and was rescued after an unknown passenger identified the girl from a missing poster that was put up at the railway station.
The arrested accused has been identified as Rani Yadav (19).
On Wednesday, a call was made to the control room informing the police about a woman near the Andheri railway station who had been carrying a child along with her. The caller told the police that the girl resembled the picture that was put up on a missing poster at Andheri station. The GRP reached the spot and took the woman and child into custody. The girl’s parents were called and after they identified their daughter, Rani was arrested by the Nirmal Nagar police with whom the girl’s kidnapping case had been registered in September 2014.
Police sources revealed that the girl was kidnapped from Bandra terminus by an unknown person in September last year. Her mother who is a pavement dweller, in her statement, had told the police that she had left her daughter near a local tea stall for a few minutes but when she returned, her daughter was missing.
“We are uncertain if the girl was kidnapped by Rani or someone else. Rani isn’t cooperating and is behaving as though she is mentally unstable and isn’t aware of anything. Our investigations are underway,” said an official associated with the Nirmal Nagar police station.
The police arrested Rani and registered a case against her under sections 363 (Punishment for kidnapping) and 363A of the IPC.
