600 sq mt pilot project launched, more in pipeline
Bhayandar : While the twin-city is rapidly turning in to a concrete jungle, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), has carved out an elaborate mangrove plantation drive in its vast coastline zone. As a part of the pilot project, the Tree Authority, has carried out mangrove plantation in an area admeasuring 600 sq mt in the Jesal Park creek area of Bhayandar (E).
As per the Tree Census report, which had also been commissioned to survey mangrove density across the 79.5 sq. km region, a total area of 29.1 sq km area is covered by mangroves. The bio-diversity survey conducted by Terracon Ecotech, using the satellite imageries has revealed the identity of 10 mangrove species. “Mangroves are not the only coastal vegetation but more appropriately they are the ecosystem which is vital for the environment as well as for nearby inhabitants.” said civic chief, Bharat Shitole.
The MBMC has mooted a Rs 3 crore project in which six spots across the twin-city have been identified to plant and maintain mangrove saplings.
