Mumbai : Opposition parties were up in arms in the BMC general body meeting on Wednesday, against the controversial decision to allow the memorial to Balasaheb Thackery in the Mayor’s bungalow. The Opposition members demanded that the memorial should be set up in Matoshree itself, a demand refused outright by the Shiv Sena and BJP.
It was declared by the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday that the memorial would be raised in the Mayor’s bungalow and all the power for the same was handed over to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.
Opposition leader Bala Amberkar said: “Matoshree is the place where Balasaheb lived his life and raised Shiv Sena and everyone is associated with his memories in Matoshree only.” He also said that “the Mayor is the first citizen of Mumbai and the Mayor’s bungalow has a heritage status. It is not appropriate to shift the Mayor from his/her house which is allocated since 1928.”
Amberkar further commented that the move is a result of the BJP’s low morale after Bihar poll debacle. “The BJP is on a low after Bihar polls defeat. So, it now wants some security and is involving in Shiv Sena’s affairs for support. It’s a political move of the BJP-led government,” he said.
