‘Fake’ corporators flaunt civic emblem on vehicles
Bhayandar : There are 94 civic representatives in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), however the number of people flaunting civic logos on their vehicles seem to be far more. However despite the rampant misuse, the civic administration and police personnel have been unable to reign in these blatant violations. After a complaint filed by social activist Om Prakash Pal, the Kashimira unit of the Traffic Wing of the Thane (rural) police recently took action under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, against three car owners who had pasted the MBMC logos on their vehicles. However, all the three offenders who reportedly belonged to a political party were prosecuted with a monetary fine of just Rs. 100.
“The petty fine is hardly a deterrent as the advantages of sporting the sticker in terms of toll evasion, extracting benefits so their vehicles are not towed away by the traffic police and last but not the least flaunting the power belonging to a privileged class. “ says Pal.
The civic authorities have claimed that they had already procured a list of offenders from the Road Traffic Authorities and process was on to book them under section 170 (personating a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code. Interestingly the MBMC is yet to give its official nod to the elected representatives to affix the civic emblem on private vehicles. Despite the fact that it was empowered to take criminal action against those using the logo signs, the civic administration is yet to make up their mind to crackdown on the logo misuse.
