Bhayandar : After a lull of more than five months, the MBMC launched a fresh crackdown against illegally constructed bars and hotels sending shivers down the spine of Mira Road’s notorious “bar mafia”. A civic demolition squad, led by Srikrishna Mohite, on Wednesday, demolished Hotel Sangeet, which had sprung up illegally on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway near Kashimira.

The illegally constructed structure housed a bar and guest house in its premises, officials said. The owner had procured a stay from the lower courts to protect the illegal construction, however, the MBMC is now taking extra care to regularly monitor cases pertaining to illegal structures which have been shielded by stay orders issued by the judiciary.

“Once the stay is vacated, we have been ordered to spring into action and demolish the illegal constructions. In this case too, the structure was immediately demolished after the stay was lifted.” Mohite said.

With the lower courts liberally granting injunctions in cases wherein the corporation has been issuing show-causes notices under the BPMC Act, the encroachment mafia has managed to protect hundreds of illegal constructions that have plagued the Mira-Bhayandar area, sources said.
