Mumbai: After the death of a South Mumbai dentist in an accident in a lift of the Bhau Daji Lad Museum last month, Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, who is also the president of the museum, wrote a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and action should be taken against the concerned authorities. A 63-year-old dentist, who sustained serious injuries in a lift collapse at the museum in in Byculla last month, died at Masina Hospital on Thursday. The Grant Road resident’s last rites will be performed on Saturday.
Dr. Arnavaz Havewalla, who practised at Gamadia Polyclinic in Tardeo, visited the museum along with her daughter around 2 pm on April 28. They entered a hydraulic lift from the first floor and it started falling towards the ground floor rapidly. It then got stuck between the first and ground floors for about five to six minutes. Due to the impact of the collapse, the mother and the daughter suffered back injuries. Dr. Havewalla suffered severe multiple injuries, including a pelvic fracture.
In his letter, the Mayor alleged that the management authority of the museum did not inform him about the mishap.
This incident is a medico-legal case and hence the victims were to be taken to the government hospital for the medical treatment, but they were taken to a private hospital. The mayor has instructed the Commissioner to take immediate steps for inquiry and legal action against the concerned officials of the museum. The Mayor also said that the corporation should take possession of this museum after the term of the agreement reached with the private corporation will be completed on September 2019.
